This was one fantastic night. I had a blast christening the new venue Diesel (R.I.P Nick's Fat City). I got there and the Casper Crew just rolled in from getting lost so I was treated to a tour from the owner. Everything I loved from Nick's (the sightlines, the balcony) they kept, adding a killer sound system and very impressive lighting design/backdrop which makes this joint a great live venue.

First up was Black Moth Super Rainbow. I have always wanted to see these local nutty kids but never had the chance. Talking to one of the guys before the show I was a tad worried what might be coming up. They have a standard rhythm section of drums and bass but compliment it with three keyboardists and vocoder. Great, we're getting Ross from Friends tonight. When they started I was very relieved that they were good...really good.

The keyboard/synth aspect of the performance was very evident but somehow it worked. With the visuals they had going, they blew me away.

Some YouTube Goodness:

Very original vibe they got going. I hope they make a splash at SXSW this year and represent the 'burgh well!

Next up was Casper & The Cookies. I was looking forward to hearing them and when they took the stage and started to this over-the-top-glam-kitschy number, I was kinda bummed that they looked and sounded like a novelty act. Soon they began to really rock out and my fears subsided as they stormed through the rest of their set of original power pop.

A lil' bit 'o Cookie Love:

My boy Ben treated me to a cheap beer down the street and worrying that The Apples already started, we returned with Robert adjusting his gear on stage. I walked up to him and asked if he'd play 'Stream Running Over' (the very first Apples tune I ever heard) and very cordially he said sure, no problem. Fuckin' A!

This band was ON! They all looked like they were having the time of their lives onstage and totally ripped through a generous set of new and classic material. Robert was ra-ra-RIPPIN' on that geetar of his. I would be totally surprised if this show doesn't make my top ten of the year.

The Apples doin' their thang:

Robert Schneider hand-written setlist

The Apples In Stereo (sans Hilarie Sidney and Chris McDuffie) autographed Tone Soul Evolution, Her Wallpaper Reverie, The Discovery Of A World Inside The Moone, and Let's Go EP CD covers

Bill Doss autographed Olivia Tremor Control's Presents: Singles And Beyond and Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume 1 CD covers

Looking at the CD covers I had, Bill dismissed them saying he only tours with The Apples. When he eventually saw the Olivia ones, he was truly excited that I brought them and he spent the next ten minutes explaining the details in the discs cover art. REAL cool dude.

Robert Schneider autographed print (He said he was going to give the original to his wife!)

Producer Robert Schneider autographed Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea CD insert

I asked Robert if he felt O.K. autographing this and he said, "Sure, I am really proud of this record."
