The Best of 2005

The year that brought us hurricanes, Lindsay Lohan, and for me a sweet raise, also brought some amazing music. Without further ado...

My Top 10 Discs of 2005

 Built Like Alaska-Autumnland

Theme From Autumnland/Ran Into A Coroner/Does Your Mother Feel Sick?/(I Want) A Happy Home/Dirty Mouth/Heavy Foot
Train Wrecks (Don't Sing Of Them)/Allergies And Lust/Wet Hay In A Barn/Random Car/Controlled Climate/It Will Keep You Warm
Almost the Earth/Quake Song

Undoubtedly, THE discovery of the year for me. These guys (and gal) became my favorite, all-time, #1, good-time, happy-happy musical group in 2005 (sound familiar?). Ordering this disc on a whim, having the band play most of it live for me and discovering that the band members are super cool people are the highlight of the year for me. Just a great disc.

The Mendoza Line-Full Of Light And Full Of Fire

Water Surrounds/Catch A Collapsing Star/Golden Boy (Torture In The Shed)/Rat's Alley/Settle Down, Zelda/Pipe Stories/Name Names
Mysterious In Black/Morbid Craving/The Lethal Temptress/Our Love Is Like a Wire

Last year I saw The Mendoza Line perform one of their last shows supporting Fortune. I loved the band's music a lot. I started e-mailing  Timothy Bracy  and he would send me mp3's of the rough takes on songs that would appear on this disc. I heard most of the disc by the time it came out but hearing it as a whole just solidified the fact that to me this is the best band in America today. Check the liner notes!!

Slow Dazzle-The View From The Floor

Fleur De Lis/A Welfare State/Wedding Dance/The Prosecution Rests/The Extent Of My Remarks
The View From The Floor/Anthem/Now Or Never Or Later

A quiet little gem from Timothy and Shannon of The Mendoza Line. My only complaint is that it runs only 30-some minutes. I LOVE this disc 'Now Or Never Or Later' is undeniably the best song I heard all year.

Ryan Adams And The Cardinals-Cold Roses

Disc 1: Magnolia Mountain/Sweet Illusions/Meadowlake Street/When Will You Come Back Home?/Beautiful Sorta
Now That You're Gone/Cherry Lane/Mockingbirdsong/How Do You Keep Love Alive?

Disc 2: Easy Plateau/Let It Ride/Rosebud/Cold Roses/If I'm A Stranger/Dance All Night/Blossom/Life Is Beautiful/Friends

This disc is scattershot in that some songs are soooo slow and boring that it kind of hurts the album as a whole (like most of Adam's output, it's called editing, bro). The good songs more than make up for it. Jacksonville City Nights also released late this year is quickly becoming a favorite. Maybe more so than this disc? Maybe?

Great Lake Swimmers-Great Lake Swimmers/Bodies And Minds

GLS: Moving Pictures, Silent Films/The Man With No Skin/Moving, Shaking/Merge, A Vessel, A Harbour/I Will Never See The Sun
This Is Not Like Home/The Animals Of The World/Faithful Night, Listening/Three Days At Sea (Three Lost Years)/Great Lake Swimmers

B&M: Song For The Angels/Let's Trade Skins/When It Flows/Various Stages/Bodies And Minds/To Leave It Behind/Falling Into The Sky
Imaginary Bars/I Saw You In The Wild/I Could Be Nothing/Long Into The Evening

Bodies And Minds was the 2005 release. The first s/t debut (2003) wasn't available in the U.S. till this year so I included it as well. Either or, both of these albums are beautiful as hell.

Norfolk & Western-If You Were Born Overseas

The Shortest Stare/From The Interests Of Few/A Gilded Age/Edison/She Won't Be Famous/Banish All Rock/Porch Destruction/Day One/You Can Always Return

Another huge discovery this year. Opening for and backing M.Ward, they just blew me away with their simplicity and their obvious musicianship. I have since went and got most of their back catalogue. Very lo-fi, artsy fartsy music. Wonderful.

Radar Bros.-The Fallen Leaf Pages

Faces Of The Damned/To Remember/Papillon/Government Land/We're Not Listening/Dark Road Window/Like An Ant Floating In Milk
Is That Blood/The River Shade/Show Yourself/Sometime, Awhile Ago/The Fish/Breathing Again

Merge records streamed most of the album on their website and I would listen to it constantly. Who were these guys? I ordered the disc and still listened to it relentlessly. I've heard some compare their sound as a cross between Neil Young and Pink Floyd. Works for me.

Marah-If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry

The Closer/The Hustle/City Of Dreams/Fat Boy/Sooner Or Later/So What If We're Outta Tune (w / The Rest of the World)
The Demon Of White Sadness/The Dishwasher's Dream/Poor People/Walt Whitman Bridge/The Apartment

Their most solid record in years. Hell, I'm listening to it right now. This should have been ranked higher.

Bright Eyes-I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

At The Bottom Of Everything/We Are Nowhere And It's Now/Old Soul Song (For The New World Order)/Lua
Train Under Water/First Day of My Life/Another Travelin' Song/Landlocked Blues/Poison Oak/Road To Joy

I didn't know Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst from the neighbor's dog till I kept hearing all the buzz from this release. What the hell. I picked it up and totally loved everything about it. People complain that his voice and singing style is whiney and annoying. I agree, but to me that's a plus. It adds to the tone of the material. I listened to this a ton this year.

dios malos-dios (malos)

Feels Good Being Somebody/Say Anything/I Want It All/So Do I/EPK/Tokyo Sunrise
Grrrl/No Dance Now/I Feel Fine All The Time/My Broken Bones/Goin' Home/I'm Only Daydreaming

These guys make great music. This disc is very catchy. I am looking forward to see this band develop and grow.

Top 10 Live Songs

'Flat Chested Girl From Maynardville'-Bobby Bare Jr.

Monday May 9

When a performer says from the stage that they are going to play the best show they have ever done in front of a crowd of eight fucking people, take their word for it. This show absolutely smoked. This version was just exactly perfect. My favorite show of the year.

'Train Wrecks (Don't Sing Of Them)'-Built Like Alaska

Saturday September 17

Regular readers of this page know all about my love for this band and the situation regarding their Pittsburgh area appearance. What you may not know is that I videotaped the performance as a little keepsake of the night. 'Train Wrecks' was a favorite of mine on the disc and I heard that they recently re-arranged it. The 'new' version is actually better IMO. On the tape you can see a group of guys blabbering away as the song begins and by the end they are silently transfixed. Excellent!

'Throw It In The Fire'-Slow Dazzle

Monday August 15

Even though they played the entire The View From The Floor disc, and even though they played a beautifully sloppy version of 'Something Dark' at my request, this song was an absolutely stunning show closer. A perfectly somber rendition. I videotaped this show as well. Thanks Shan!

'La Cienega Just Smiled'-Ryan Adams & The Cardinals

Friday May 13

I was sooo looking forward to seeing Ryan Adams. I have been and still am a huge fan of his (hell, I like 29) and when a show was announced the same week as Bobby Bare Jr., I was in heaven. His show was...erm...kinda on and off with his bullshit rantings and all but this song and a few others ('Shakedown On 9th Street', 'Magnolia Mountain') were absolutely incredible. I was struck that night at how great of a vocalist the guy is.

'Sad Lover's Waltz'-Cracker w/ The Hackensaw Boys

Thursday April 7

Unbelievable!

'Raise The Sparks'-Akron/Family

Monday September 5

This band came outta nowhere and put on one of THE best shows I have ever seen! This song was their show stopping finale. They could've stopped at the first number and it still would have been the one of the best shows I have ever seen.

'Runnin' With The Devil'-Magnolia Electric Co. w/ Grand Buffet

Saturday August 20

Talk about opposites attract. Absolute pure fun.

'Reservation Girl'-Marah

Wednesday June 8

The Surge got up on the bar, blistering through a solo as the camera tried to pan down towards his shredding fingaz. Who do I have to fuck in the mouth to see that footage?

'When You Wish Upon A Star>Fast Rag>You Still Believe In Me'-M. Ward

Friday April 8

He moved the mic away from his guitar in the middle of this medley! Pure musicianship

'We're All In This Together'-Ben Lee

Sunday June 19

This show was on a beautiful sunny Father's Day afternoon. When you go into the crowd, you got me hooked.

Late to the party

Older music I discovered this year

Marc Bolan & T. Rex-20th Century Boy: The Ultimate Collection

(2002)

Debora/One Inch Rock/King Of The Rumbling Spires/By The Light Of A Magical Moon/Elemental Child/Ride A White Swan/Summertime Blues/
Jewel/Beltane Walk/Hot Love/Get It On (Bang A Gong)/There Was A Time-Raw Ramp/Cosmic Dancer/Jeepster/Telegram Sam/Metal Guru/
Mystic Lady/The Slider/Children Of The Revolution/Solid Gold Easy Action/20th Century Boy/Born To Boogie/I Love To Boogie

I love best of comps. It gives you an overview of an artist without investing in the entire catalogue. I heard the "hits" from T. Rex and wanted to discover more. This generous collection has his early folksy stuff along with his high powered glam shit that defined a genre. Classic rock at it's best.

The Apples In Stereo-The Discovery Of A World Inside The Moone

(2000)

Go/The Rainbow/Stream Running Over/20 Cases Suggestive Of.../Look Away/What Happened Then
I Can't Believe/Submarine Dream/Allright-Not Quite/The Bird That You Can't See/Stay Gold/The Afternoon

This band and a few others in the list are part of the Elephant 6 Collective, a group of bands from Athens, Georgia. I heard the track 'Stream Running Over' from the bands MySpace page and bought the disc on that strength of that track alone. The rest of the album is just as fun, trippy, and quirky as 'Stream'.

South San Gabriel-Welcome, Convalescence

(2003)

New Brookland/Saint Augustine/Smelling Medicinal/Everglades/Like A Madman/Evangaline/Ariza-284/The Splinter Angelic

Having discovered Will Johnson and his band Centro-matic last year, it took me till this year to check out his other band South San Gabriel. Their first release Welcome, Convalescence is a concise, mellow, lazy masterpiece. This disc might have THE best opening three tracks on a record ever.

The Olivia Tremor Control-Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One

(1999)

Opening/A Peculiar Noise Called 'Train Director'/Combinations/Hideway/Black Foliage Animation 1/Combinations/The Sky Is A Harpsichord Canvas/
A Sleepy Company/Grass Canons/A New Day/Combinations/Black Foliage Animation 2/I Have Been Floated/Paranormal Echoes/Black Foliage Animation 3/
A Place We Have Been To/Black Foliage (Itself)/The Sylvan Screen/The Bark And Below It/Black Foliage Animation 4/California Demise 3/
Looking For Quiet Seeds/Combinations/Mystery/Another Set Of Bees In The Museum/Black Foliage Animation 5/Hilltop Procession Momentum Gaining

Holy hell? Look at that track listing. Don't let it fool you. This release from another Elephant 6 band consists of 27 tracks and runs around 70+ minutes, but many of the 'songs' are electronic noise collages that last for a few seconds, yawn. The 'normal' tunes are catchy psychedelic romps that can be easily mistaken for some of the classic hippy anthems of the 60's.

Okkervil River-Down The River Of Golden Dreams

(2003)

It Ends With A Fall/For The Enemy/Blanket And Crib/The War Criminal Rises And Speaks/The Velocity Of Saul At The Time Of His Conversion
Dead Faces/Maine Island Lovers/Song About A Star/Yellow/Seas Too Far To Reach

With their Black Sheep Boy released this year I went back and got the rest of the Okkervil River catalogue. This disc undeniably their best. This might be my favorite CD I bought this year. I suggest you get this disc now, believe me, you will love it. They stopped in Pittsburgh for the Golden Dreams tour and where the fuck was I?

Neutral Milk Hotel-In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

(1998)

I was hearing all kind of mad buzz on this band and their fabled final sophomore album. I decided to pick it up and instantly loved it. What a classic indeed. Someone explained being jealous of people who never heard Aeroplane because they will get to experience listening to it with virgin ears. True 'dat. They stopped in Pittsburgh for the Aeroplane tour and where the fuck was I?

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell-20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection

(2000)

Your Precious Love/Ain't No Mountain High Enough/You're All I Need To Get By/Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing/
Good Lovin' Ain't Easy To Come By/If This World Were Mine/Two Can Have A Party/If I Could Build My Whole World Around You/
Keep On Lovin' Me Honey/You Ain't Livin' Till You're Lovin'/Hold Me Oh My Darling

I like the old Motown stuff and wanted to pick this up for awhile. I wasn't going to drop 16 bucks for this and when I saw it for 10, I bit. Is it good? Of course.

Earlimart-Treble And Tremble

(2004)

Hold On Slow Down/First Instant Last Report/The Hidden Track/Sounds/The Valley People/All They Ever Do Is Talk/A Bell And A Whistle/
Broke The Furniture/Unintentional Tape Manipulations/Heaven Adores You/808 Crickets/Tell the Truth Parts 1 & 2/It's Okay to Think About Ending

I picked this up in December of last year and it would have EASILY made my top 10. I listen to this a ton and there is not one bad track on it. This band is close with Grandaddy, and you can hear the similarities.

Big Star-Big Star Story

(2003)

September Gurls/Thank You Friends/Don't Lie To Me/Ballad Of El Goodo/Holocaust/I Am The Cosmos/In The Street/You Get What You Deserve
Thirteen/You & Your Sister/Back Of A Car/Jesus Christ/Mod Lang/Baby Strange/O Dana/Motel Blues/Nightime/Hot Thing

Having heard that Alex Chilton and Big Star were huge influences on some of my favorite bands (Wilco, R.E.M., et al) I decided to begin with a retrospective. Bad move. This disc is O.K. (a little scattershot) but after I picked it up I read that getting their first release #1 Record/Radio City would be the best intro to the band.

Yo La Tengo-Prisoners of Love: A Smattering of Scintillating Scenescent Songs 1985-2003

(2005)

Disc 1: Shaker/Sugarcube/Barnaby, Hardly Working/Little Eyes/Stockholm Syndrome/Our Way To Fall/From A Motel 6/
Swing For Life/Tom Courtenay/I Heard You Looking/You Can Have It All/Did I Tell You

Disc 2: The River Of Water/Autumn Sweater/Big Day Coming/Pablo And Andrea/Drug Test/Season Of The Shark/Upside-Down/The Summer/
Tears Are In Your Eyes/Blue Line Swinger/The Story Of Jazz/Nuclear War (Version 1)/By The Time It Gets Dark

Disc 3: Stay Away From Heaven/Pencil Test*/Almost True*/Tom Courtenay (Acoustic)/Big Day Coming (Demo)*/Dreaming/Bad Politics/
Blue-Green Arrow/Decora (Acoustic)*/Out The Window (Original version)/Weather Shy/Dreams/
Autumn Sweater (Kevin Shields remix)/Ashes On The Ground/Mr. Ameche Plays The Stranger/Magnet

*-previously unreleased

Now this is a best of. These three discs are a great overview of a band that I definitely should have been into. The best part is that It was under $20.
