First/Last-Empires

“With Orphan, Empires climb to rare heights. Their vivid rock ‘n’ roll is now fused with an imaginative and open-armed approach. Born of singer Sean Van Vleet’s fascination with contemporary popcraft, songs like “Please Don’t Tell My Lover” and the night-driving “How Good Does It Feel” see the Chicago-based band adopting time-honored romantic idioms, both musical and lyrical, to mask deeper and darker personal truths. Van Vleet put pen to paper and began to write in a wholly free space,
with no expectations or endgame in mind. He explored a musical language that was quite literally out of character, imagining his songs performed not by Empires but by some indeterminate modern pop thrush.”…

First/Last-Alter The Design

“Alter The Design is an independent American post-grunge band formed in Pittsburgh, PA from a culmination of well known local musicians. The band was founded by JJ, Roman, and Mark in late 2013, a year after their prior project Until We Wake disbanded. In the process of writing new material they auditioned drummers and invited Amanda, formerly of Mushcup, to join. However, after a couple of months, Mark decided to part ways due to creative differences. At this time he was replaced by Craig who worked with JJ previously in Besides Reason as well as owned the website The Pittsburgh Scene. They have since been gaining recognition for their impressive live shows and are looking to enter the studio in the near future.”…

First/Last-Vincent Colbert

“Ann Arbor based singer-songwriter Vincent Colbert writes tunes that are heart-rending yet filled with hope. His painstakingly honest lyrics and tender vocal delivery capture a sentiment many relate to. “I was drawn to music at a young age. I quickly realized how it could impact people’s lives in a positive way, and it’s always been my hope that my music would somehow do that for others.” Over the years Vince has worked on various projects, including releasing an EP and full-length album with the indie-folk duo Chalet Shalom. More recently he’s turned his attention to his solo project, releasing the EP “Broken Joy” in March 2014. He recently finished a second EP and is planning to release it in January 2015. Vince’s live shows are always warm and intimate experiences.”…

First/Last-J Fernandez

Having migrated to Chicago for a job with the Rand McNally map company in the early aughts, J, or Justin, spent his following years playing in friends’ projects in Chicago’s active DIY scene. In his own time, he was mapping out out a series of personal recordings in his rudimentary home studio, it was these recordings that would develop into the first EP, Olympic Village. Though somewhat crudely recorded…

First/Last-The Quick & Easy Boys

“On their fourth full-length, Portland, Oregon-based psychedelic rock/melodic-pop outfit The Quick & Easy Boys make a record you can shake your hips and move your feet to, all courtesy of Los Lobos keyboardist/horn player and producer Steve Berlin. Berlin recorded Follow Us Overboard at Modest Mouse mastermind Isaac Brock’s private studio, where Modest Mouse has been recording their next record for the past two years; The Quick & Easy Boys the first outside band to record there.”…

First/Last-Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes

“They never look the same at the end of their set; a pair of hip horn-rimmed glasses breaks in half, buttons become undone, and their once slicked-back hair is simply not anymore. But they wouldn’t be themselves if it were any other way; they thrive when they render themselves void of energy, and humbly hope it rubs off on the kids in the crowd, too.
They are Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes. To see them live is to experience the crux of who they are: A high-energy indie rock band dead set on producing the best live sound they know how. And boy, do they know how.”…

First/Last-Flashlights

They’re called Flashlights and they are a rather spectacular band from the decidedly unspectacular Brevard County, Florida. What began as a solo acoustic project for 24-year-old singer/guitarist Terry Caudill in 2007 has added various members from the local punk scene.”…
