Blog

HughShows Blog has featured thousands of original live band photos and has conducted over 1000 musician interviews (including Brian Wilson, Mavis Staples, and Bruce Hornsby) since starting. With the original ‘First/Last’ questionnaire, you get a sense of where the musician has come from and where they are going with their artistic expression.

First/Last-Shawn MacIntyre

“Shawn MacIntyre is a vocalist who sings Celtic Traditional, Medieval and Maritime songs in the acapella form. Shawn is a tenor that brings the spirit of the songs to life. He is graceful in style, cheerful in spirit, and pleasantly varied, the listener can feel every word. He began performing publicly at Pittsburgh’s premiere open stage, Acousticafe; since then he has entertained and delighted crowds at Papa J’s Centro, Cannon Café, The Venue at Harmony Ridge as well as private shows.”…

First/Last-Safety Scissors

Talk about ‘boy-band’. These little dudes are are 2/3 the offspring of Pittsburgh musician and friend of the blog, Chad Sipes and have released a fun music video / single of what every pre-school boy cares about most, dinosaurs, called ‘Never Stop a Dinosaur‘! As Chad explains, “He wrote the hook while we were playing with toys and the next night I recorded the basic track and stuck a mic in his face. He made up the lyrics on the fly and I spliced together three takes and it was done. Check it out as I thank Harper for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last

First/Last-Chancellor Warhol

“Antonio Dewayne Boleyjack was born in Nashville, TN. He grew up drawn to art, cinema, fashion and a diverse culture all of which helped shape his very own style of music today. Channeling an alternative/electro rap style, Warhol released his first solo album titled Japanese Lunchbox in 2010 (Voted Best Rap Album of 2010 by the Nashville Scene). He has gone on to release two more well received projects, The Silver Factory (2011) and the Playlist for Edie mixtape (2012)…

Autumn of 2013 saw the band begin work on their second album, Chorus, with lauded engineer Gary Olson (whose body of work includes records by Crystal Stilts, Mad Scene and The Beets) at his Marlborough Farms studio in Brooklyn, NY. As a beautiful autumn turned into one of the harshest winters in recent memory, Olson and the band began stretching out, enhancing the album with studio techniques dating back to the late 60s including true-tape flanging, sending vocals through Leslie speaker cabinets, and the same analog style of automatic double-tracking created at Abbey Road Studios…

First/Last-The Spectres

Posted on August 18, 2014

“Pittsburgh transplants James Thompson and Dan Spagnolo formed their very own brand of distorted, stripped down, 2-piece gunk punk garage music in February of 2014. Influenced by 60s garage rock, 50s rock’n’roll, girl groups, as well as modern garage and punk acts, they arrive at a concentrated amalgamation of rock energy, typically delivered in two minute doses. Come witness their extraterrestrial prowess before they phone home back to the Andromeda galaxy.”…

First/Last-Heather Kropf

Posted on July 29, 2014

“I think I’ll be someone I’ve never been before,” sings Heather Kropf in “Sweet Liberty,” one of the key tracks on Chrysalis. The album is the Pittsburgh-based singer/songwriter’s fourth long-player, but in many ways it feels like a debut release. There’s a sense of transformation and new possibility pouring out of these tracks, heard in both the songs and the sound of the recording itself. Heather sings of change, healing and redemption with a voice tempered by experience and inspired by hope. It marks a breakthrough for her both personally and artistically.”Barry Alfonso..
