First/Last-Wood Ear

“Five years after his first release, the 2007 EP The Hard Way, Wood Ear auteur Nate Tarr returns with his second EP, Steeple Vultures. The Durham resident’s debut vacillated between twangy college rock, introspective folk and jangling country-folk, offering a nice cross-section of tunes buoyed by durable hooks and keen phrasing. Tarr’s vocals sally forth with a slacker’s fishtail, his plaintive tone harking back to late ’80s acts like Sebaboh, Dinosaur Jr. and Meat Puppets.” – Chris Parker…

First/Last-Metropolis America

“The Cold War was about tension, propaganda, and the struggle for global influence. So is Rock and Roll. Metropolis America began in Philadelphia in 2010 when musician and songwriter Cristian Mora connected with drummer Rick Eddy. Mora and
Eddy, both children of the Cold War, forged a bond that led to the creation of a sound they call “Cold Pop”- a 21st Century take on the sound and sentiment from the Cold War era in the United States. The first product of this connection and sound
was the band’s “The Cold Pop Singles” ep in 2011. The addition of Greg Kinter on guitar in 2012 helped to shape the latest creation.”…

First/Last-Quilt

It’s not uncommon to form a band while in college, and that is exactly what Quilt did. Its primary members, Shane Butler and Anna Fox Rochinski (as well as Taylor Mcvay—who plays on much of the record, but has since left the band amicably) were all visual art students at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, but bonded over their mutual love of weird, experimental jams and classic pop harmonies. John Andrews joined the band as drummer after opening for every Quilt show on tour in 2009…

Many years later”, the tenor saxophonist Branford Marsalis recalled, “a lot of younger musicians were hanging around with Elvin Jones, and they were talking about, ‘Man, you know, you guys had an intensity when you were playing with Coltrane.
