Born into a military family, I have traveled all my life. Must have gotten into my blood. Never cared much for routine. I started out in biology, collecting reptiles for zoos and museums, but then traveled. Pruned apple trees in NY, farmed wheat in WA, painted houses in Key West, drove truck in NYC, published articles in magazines, hiked the Amazon and Andes… writing songs the whole time.

Mark Browning is a folk rock singer-songwriter who has been kicking around the Pittsburgh music scene for decades, most notably as a member of the band Sandoz who I used to see regularly in the late 80’s and early 90’s. As a solo artist, Mark has just released a fantastic collection of songs Out From Nowhere. Mark explains, “The concept of an album called Out From Nowhere came as I was living in the Sierra Nevada foothills and traveling the country in a trailer in various picturesque places, without a television, and often alone.” You can check him out as he will have his CD release show on August 24 in the Southside later this month. I want to thank Mark for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
The first album I bought (after I became musically aware, so Herb Alpert doesn’t count) was most likely the Black Album by Chicago. A great album, far different from later work they did which was increasingly commercial.

Your last album bought?
Bruce Cockburn, Speechless. I lent it to someone and didn’t get it back. Worth a second buy without a doubt.

Favorite album of all time?
Oh man! How about if I name five and if you need to have one you can erase the rest?
1. Infidels, Dylan. 2. Blue, Joni Mitchell. 3. The Heart of Saturday Night, Tom Waits, 4. Jackson Browne (Self-titled), 5. Harvest Moon, Neil Young.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Astral Weeks, Van Morrison. (Love the guy otherwise.)

First concert attended?
Paul Simon, Syria Mosque, back before Garfunkel. Simon was playing with his brother–also a great guitarist.

Last concert?
Van Morrison, St. Petersburg.

Favorite concert ever?
Bob Dylan at the Benedum. It was his Slow Train Comin’ tour and believe me the whole place danced all night long. He made it fun that night.

Least favorite concert?
Bob Dylan at IUP. Oh my, he didn’t care what he sounded like. Just a bunch of his better known stuff all played and spit out the same.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh… I was a military brat so we traveled the world but we always came back here and it was always so unique… back then it was the steel mills making the sky glow red at night and Forbes Field and the crack of the bat and roar of the crowd, the winding streets and long bridges, the smell of the city like iron ore after a rain, the locusts singing, the rivers never ending. Today, I live on a hill high above town, and it is the sight of the city skyline wherever I go, and the sounds of trains hooting at the crossroads, and even better the long deep soft roars of tug boats at night. That is Pittsburgh to me.

Thanks, Mark. So nice to bump into you the other night. Probably the first time we talked face to face in over 30 years. Serendipity.

When I launched a music website on July 18, 2004 that would focus on my photos, ephemera, and setlists from concerts I attended in Pittsburgh, I could never imagine that I would still be doing it 15 years later, let alone the way it has evolved since then. Based on what I was feeling at any given time, this ‘hobby’ has become a natural extension of my interests and I was always willing to change (it wasn’t even called HughShows for the first couple of weeks as you can tell from the image above!) It became a blog, it became a vehicle to put on some of my DIY shows, it became a TV series, and it allowed me to network and work with so many cool people, most notably my friends from the Deutschtown Music Festival. And the important thing to note is that the reason I did became friends with so many people in Pittsburgh music is due to the simple fact that this was always a positive entity for me. I rarely, if ever, complained about what I was doing because no one told me what to do and I loved every minute of it. I have to mention so many artists and musicians really kept me going throughout these years through their generosity and openness and I will never be able to sufficiently respond in kind. Finally, I have to thank every single person who has ever visited the site, liked a photo or post, gave me encouragement, came to one of my shows, posted a positive comment and who were just supportive in any way to HughShows. I really do appreciate it more than you will ever know.

So let’s keep going and to celebrate, at the bottom of the page on HughShows Radio you can stream the entire set from Meeting of Important People from the Lohio reunion show at the Thunderbird Café on January 17, 2015. How fitting!

niku daruma is three hopeful young women loving each other the only way they know how to

niku daruma is a industrial noise band who came to my attention through the Deutschtowm Music Festival submission process. They are totally on their own wavelength as a band and perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea but I cannot wait to see them play tomorrow (Saturday, July 13) at Blacksmith Studios (900 Middle St.) around 8pm. I want to thank the band for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

“Pittsburgh based grunge/blues three piece band. drums. keys. whiskey.”

Luxury Machine are grunge rock duo taking a cue from The Black Keys in adding soul and blues to the mix to create an energetic sound that reminds the listener of a classic rock vibe while still sounding fresh. Experience the band as they perform tonight (Friday, July 5) on the Southside for a late show with fellow locals Levi Bronson. I want to thank Ben Portz (Keys/Vocals) for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

Favorite concert ever?
John Butler Trio in Chicago.

Least favorite concert?
Train – had to open for them in a previous band… so obligated to stay.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
In general… I’ve been highly impressed with the Pittsburgh music scene – every time I go out, I end up finding solid players. Plus with more venues opening up, it’s exposing me to a ton of great music.

Thanks, Ben. The old double edge sword of venue proliferation. Is more better? That is a situation that has to play itself out to see if it results in a positive.

“The Andrew Hendryx Band was formed as a musical outlet for electric mandolin pioneer Andrew Hendryx (Yarn) and saxophonist J. Wall. Thriving on playing live and reflecting the energy of its growing fan base, the AHB fuses all-star collaborations, jam-infused covers, spacey sonic explorations, and grooving earth-conscious originals.

Mandolinist Andrew Hendryx is a best known as the co-founder of roots bands Yarn and Dangermuffin who just this week released a fantastic solo album entitled Deep River. Comprising of originals and much loved cover songs, Andrew recorded the album while residing in the Pittsburgh area. Do yourself a favor and give his music a spin as I thank Andrew for participating in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
Van Halen’s 1984 and Led Zeppelin IV on vinyl at Merle’s Record Rack in Guilford, CT.

Your last album bought?
I just bought Stevie Wonder’s Innervisons at George’s Song Shop in Johnstown, PA. It is a great store and apparently the oldest record store in America.

Favorite album of all time?
This is a tough question but and I’ll say The Band’s self-titled album or The Grateful Dead’s American Beauty.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
I did a recording session for a pop artist in New York City years back. I think the producer wanted a banjo player instead of a mandolinist. Being young, I tried to play banjo inspired melodies on my mandolin to appease the producer. Neither of us was very pleased with the result.

First concert attended?
Richie Havens with my Mom. The first big arena show was Miami Sound Machine and then the Grateful Dead shortly after.

Last concert?
Cabinet at the Rex. Cabinet was generous enough to pull me up on stage for a few songs. It was a great night.

Favorite concert ever?
I’ve always loved live music and have attended a lot of concerts but Jerry Garcia Band at the Hartford Civic Center was really special. It showed me the power of great phrasing.

Least favorite concert?
I try to turn off my inner music critic when I see shows and just enjoy the moment.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
I love the museums, record stores, and the music venues. There are also a lot of wonderful recording studios here that bands should take advantage of. Jesse Naus at Red Caimen Studio is a great example. He is cool, immensely talented, and the room sounds amazing.

Thanks, Andrew. Just love the album. Also, I agree that there are many quality recording studios in the area. So glad you decided to come here to record.

“Water Trash is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based 5 piece rock and roll club that consists of vocalist/guitarist Carter Vannoy, vocalist/guitarist Ryan Hartman, bassist Victor Tonti, keyboardist Ryan (Ocean) Killen, and drummer Cheyenne Raithel.”

Water Trash is a Pittsburgh garage rock band who who just released their latest EP Jazz Feet which, as the title implies, makes you want to get and and move! The band will be playing tonight (Friday, June 21) at Mr. Roboto Project before heading to New Jersey to headline a show to shoot a music video tomorrow. I want to thank the band for participating in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
The Doors Live in Pittsburgh 1970.

Your last album bought?
Black Market by Weather Report.

Favorite album of all time?
We’ve all been listening to Safe as Milk by  Captain Beefheart a lot in the van, as of right now I would say this is our favorite album. It has been a big influence on our future projects.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Here Comes the Cowboy by Mac Demarco. We aren’t saying it’s terrible but it just seems like a slower, less interesting version of his earlier works. We are sorry Mac 🙁

First concert attended?
Van Halen (Carter), “Weird Al” (Victor), Lynyrd Skynyrd (Ocean).

Last concert?
Last concert we all saw collectively was Pond and we all loved it, they put on an amazing show and played some of their unreleased stuff.

Favorite concert ever?
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard! We saw them in Brooklyn, NY last summer. We got to meet the band and the talented Joshua Bruce who we will be shooting a music video with in New Jersey on June 22nd.

Least favorite concert?
Every bad show is a good show because it’s almost impossible to not find fun for us when surrounded by a ton of people and loud music.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh’s DIY music scene is incredible, there are a ton of music supporters everywhere like Steel City Death Club which is a DIY record label our friend Giovanni Orsini from Fortune Teller started. Connor Murray is also a good friend of ours who runs the label Crafted Sounds, we love to see independent labels and musicians thrive in Pittsburgh. We are also excited to start exploring venues in Pittsburgh outside of the house show scene such as Spirit, Mr. Smalls Funhouse, and Brillobox.

Thanks, all. I have done over a thousand of these First/Last interviews on the blog and you are the very first band to answer almost all of them as a group. Pretty cool.

“Wild Blue Yonder is a young and talented band born out of Woodland Hills High School in Pittsburgh PA.  A multi-talented group of guys, the band fuses jazz, folk rock, funk, and indie to create a unique style in a new age of music. Combined with their thoughtful and meaningful lyrics, it makes for a sound you have not heard. “

Wild Blue Yonder is an up and coming young trio from Pittsburgh who are finalizing their debut for a Summer release. They recently made news (literally) with the release of their song “Angels Prevail” which was written in response to losing classmates to gun violence. It is amazing to see a positive and creative response to such horrible events and reinforces that old adage… the kids are alright. I want to thank Eli Alfieri (Guitar/Vocals) for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
Neil Young, Harvest.

Your last album bought?

Favorite album of all time?
Grateful Dead, American Beauty.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
I don’t have one but I think that The Wall is overrated.

First concert attended?
Neil Young in Pittsburgh, 2012.

Last concert?
Greta Van Fleet in Pittsburgh, 2018

Favorite concert ever?
Jack White at X Fest in 2018.

Least favorite concert?
Got thrown out of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Weezer… lol.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
I think that Pittsburgh is one of the most friendly  and unique cities in America. It is currently home to one of the early post industrial generations where today Pittsburgh youth don’t have parents that were steel workers or factory workers and I think this is leading to a whole new enlightenment of culture in our city. This new wave of culture mixed with our loved traditions create a town that isn’t in the past or the future but simply thriving in the present. A lot of bands blame failure on the city’s scene but Wild Blue Yonder thinks that we are in the perfect place at the perfect time. We love our city.

Thanks, Eli. Amazing perspective you have on the local music community and congratulations on the song but I have to know, what did you do to get booted of out of the Weezer show?

“The Bill Henry Band, formed in 2016, is one of Pittsburgh’s preeminent R&B acts. BHB regularly sells out performances, with a loyal fan base that eagerly attends their regular outings at Rivers Casino and Savoy, and follows the band to any other venues. BHB’s stylings effortlessly segway through R&B, soul, funk and hip hop. The band’s performances are well-rehearsed and of high quality -perfect for your standalone or opening act requirements.”

I want to thank Bill (Guitar/Vocals) for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
Can’t remember, but probably Ja Rule Pain is Love or Nelly Country Grammar… in the 90s before I was buying my own CD’s, you would know a kid in class that had a CD burner and would make everyone mixes. Most of which had explicit lyrics that I wouldn’t have been allowed  to buy anyway

Your last album bought?
Gregory Porter Take Me To The Alley.

Favorite album of all time?
D’Angelo Voodoo or Anthony Hamilton Comin From Where I’m From.

First concert attended?
Guy Lombardo Big Band tribute at Kiski Area High School. My grandma would take us on Sundays when I was in elementary school.

Last concert?
Snarky Puppy at the Roxian Theatre.

Favorite concert ever?
Eric Clapton 2008 in Cuyahoga Falls. It was the first concert my dad and I went to together.

Least favorite concert?
Not sure I have one, the live music lover in me always enjoys seeing how different people perform on stage and their stage presence so there’s always something to study.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Love that there’s more music venues starting to pop up.

Thanks, Bill. Looking forward to tonight to meet you and watch you perform!

The first album you ever bought?
With my own money… not sure… but I was definitely taking advantage of those CD clubs (buy one for 99 cents and get 897,234,873 free)… I really want to say, though, the first gangsta rap tape I had was The Chronic (Dr. Dre)… my mom bought it for a party I wanted to have.

Your last album bought?
King of the Sun 2 (by Livefromthecity…Pittsburgh artist).

Favorite album of all time?
Untouchable by Scarface, also, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City by Kendrick Lamar, also Trilogy by The Weeknd.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Hmmm… not sure… but Queen by Nicki Minaj was pretttttty sad.

First concert attended?
Jay-Z/DMX in 1999.

Last concert?
Tory Lanez in 2018 (this is the last concert I went to where I was NOT the opening act lol).

Favorite concert ever?
Sade in 2011 and Tech N9ne in 2017.

Least favorite concert?
Lauryn Hill – Only because she was late and did all of the songs in quadruple time. I did get to eat a piece of the chocolate cake that was made for her, though.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
My favorite experiences/thoughts about Pittsburgh are all the fun times I had at Shadow Lounge. That place really saved my life.

“Five best friends from Pittsburgh making sounds and saving frightened crowds. Slacker rock for the people. Actively degenerating…”

The Zells are rock band from Pittsburgh who are working on brand new music as I write this. A featured band on the DIY Crafted Sounds label, the band is steadily gaining traction in the music community in Pittsburgh.
You can catch them live in at the end of the month on June 30th at The Funhouse at Mr. Smalls supporting rockers Maneka from Brooklyn. I want to thank Jackson Rogers (Guitar/Vocals) for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
The first album I remember owning was the self titled ‘N SYNC record. Which is honestly really sick. The first album I remember buying was All KIller No Filler by Sum 41. I still listen to some tracks on it when I’m drunk.

Your last album bought?
I just bought No by Nanami Ozone on cassette after seeing them live at The Mr. Roboto Project. Really good album. Very good song writing, shoegazy guitars and stuff. I’m a sucker for Shoegaze.

Favorite album of all time?
That’s a tough one. I’m gonna throw out my possible top 5. I think that’s as low as I can go.

  1. Wowee Zowee by Pavement
  2. Canned by Lost Boy?
  3. Isn’t Anything by My Bloody Valentine
  4. Exile on Main St. by The Rolling Stones
  5. Tut Tut Now Shake Ya Butt by Japanther

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
This one’s tough. I remember being somewhat disappointed about a lot of the Odd Future off-shoot albums. I was really into the early hype, and then I just don’t remember hearing much else I liked.

First concert attended?
I remember seeing Buddy Guy at the Palace theater at a pretty young age. My dad is a pretty avid fan. It really blew me away. I don’t think I had heard any electric blues stuff, up to that point. He was just a really great performer. My dad later bought me a signature Buddy Guy guitar haha. The one with the polka dots. We still use it in the Zells.

Last concert?
The Lopez Heart Punch Vinyl release show at Spirit. It was a really great night.
Everyone one that performed was excellent. I was blown away by Sammus, specifically.
Just really witty hip hop kind of stuff. They were amazing. The whole night was just really beautiful. Listen to Heart Punch if you haven’t!

Favorite concert ever?
I have a lot for this one too. But my favorite in recent memory was Stove. Super cool band from NYC. I am obsessed with all of their albums, so I was really geeking at this one. One of the best bands out there right now, as far as I’m concerned.

Least favorite concert?
Idk haha. I’ve seen a lot of bands at like Heinz Field, or at some huge outdoor festival or something. Never been my vibe, just seems really impersonal or something.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Ah, so many. The local scene is so sprawling and diverse, it’s hard for me to even wrap my head around it sometimes. Which is definitely a good thing. Every time I let my ego get out of check thinking I have some superior knowledge of the scene or something, some new band or pocket of bands come out of the woodwork and blow me away. There’s a lot going on here, it’s a fun time to be an artist. We’ve really enjoy being a part of Crafted Sounds. They’ve done a lot for Pittsburgh, you gotta mention Crafted Sounds if you’re talking about Independent music in Pittsburgh. It’s just been an honor to play in this city. We’ve seen many phases and fads within the music scene…but the people that care, the people that want to be around, make art, and contribute something positive to this city are going to keep coming around. I was reminded of this at the Lopez release show a couple Saturdays ago. We were all really broken up about Jesse Flati passing. To walk into Spirit, and see hundreds of people who came out to support Steph and buy the new Lopez record… that’s all you really need to know about Pittsburgh.

Thanks, Jackson. This scene amazes me constantly. I have been participating in my own way for so long now, I sometimes lose sight of that but am frequently reminded of the amazing comraderie and support bands give each other more often than not.

Flower Crown is a jangly dream pop band from Pittsburgh who releases their latest album entitled Sundries this very morning via local label of love Crafted Sounds on all the usual formats. They will be raging at their vinyl release show on Sunday at Spirit and since Monday is a holiday, you don’t have to wake up early… so go. I want to thank Richie Colosimo (Guitar/Vocals) and Chris Sexauer (Bass) for taking the time to participate in this editon of First/Last.

The first album you ever bought?
Chris Sexauer: Ricky Martin’s 1999 self-titled album. Livin’ la vida loca, baby.
Richie Colosimo: Damn, that song rips. I bought my first two CD’s around the early 2000’s one of which was Pure Funk, a compilation of funk music. It had bands like Earth Wind and Fire, Sly and the Family Stone, Patti Labelle, and Parliament, all legends. That record made me a much groovier person. It was that CD and Kid Rock’s Cocky. The edited version of course.

Your last album bought?
Richie: I think the last record I bought was Float Along Fill Your Lungs by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard at Juke Records in Bloomfield. RIP.
Chris: A vinyl copy of The Sound of Animals Fighting’s The Ocean and the Sun. I got to catch them on their most recent tour in Cleveland and remembered how much I loved their music.

Favorite album of all time?
Chris: For me it’s a three-way tie between Spook Houses – Trying, Titus Andronicus – The Monitor, and Modest Mouse – The Lonesome Crowded West. Spook Houses in the Fall, Modest Mouse in the Summer, and Titus Andronicus when I need to come out of a bout of self-pity.
Richie: I’m really bad at questions like this. I go in and out of phases and I have more ADD than you can shake a stick at, but I do love A Night at the Opera by Queen a lot, Dopesmoker by Sleep, anything by Earth Wind and Fire. I’ve also been listening to an unhealthy amount of Beach House, so idk. I’m rambling. There’s that ADD.

Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Richie: Oof. Uhhhh… Ordinary Corrupt Human Love by Deafheaven album was kind of disappointing, I guess. I listened to a lot of black metal/black-gaze/whatever before I heard of Deafheaven and even enjoyed Sunbather and New Bermuda when all the insufferable black metal nerds hated on them. The new record just didn’t combine their sounds well like the last few did. They did put a heater of a single out after that record though, so maybe the next album will be good.
Chris: That’s a tough one, but in recent memory it’s probably Suffer On by Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. I love Secret Boy but this new one didn’t do it for me.

 First concert attended?
Chris: I can’t remember how the timeline of this went, but I think the first two concerts I went to in the same summer were Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and a local Erie hardcore show. I’m pretty sure xRepresentx played and some dude broke my nose, ha-ha.
Richie: Besides Weird Al when I was a kid, my first show was Coheed and Cambria when I was 16. That was first time i remember being like “I want to do that.” I picked up a guitar that same year.

Last concert?
Chris: I just got to see PUP at The Rex Theater, always an amazing live show. Someone sprayed me with Hawaiian Punch during the “Hawaiian Red Fruit Punch!” line in “DVP.”
Richie: I saw Dan Deacon at Spirit Turns 4. He was so much fun live. Danced my ass off.

Favorite concert ever?
Chris: If I had to rank them, I’d probably put seeing Neutral Milk Hotel at Pitchfork 2014 at the top. The high school indie kid in me was super jazzed to see a band I never thought I’d see, and I don’t think there was a single dry eye during “Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2.”
Richie: That’s funny because Neutral Milk Hotel was definitely up there on my favorite shows too, also definitely cried a bunch. I think Shannon and the Clams at Spirit was up there too. It was just a mix of the music, being messed up, and dancing with my friends. It was just a good time. Another notable one, was turning 21 and catching a bus to Philly to see Church of Misery on their first US tour. Got to smoke with them after interrupting a conversation outside of the North Star Bar. They were so nice and welcoming and took pictures with me. So cool.

Least Favorite Concert?
Chris: I don’t know that there’s any single concert that sticks out as the worst, but there are definitely some things I see at shows that make me really start to dislike it. Namely, if the band isn’t having fun playing, if it looks like they don’t want to be there, I don’t want to be there either. Also, take the thirty seconds to tune your guitar between songs, it makes a world of difference and believe me, we notice if you don’t.
Richie: I agree with Chris. If you can afford a guitar and an amp, you can afford a cheap tuner pedal. But yeah, I really only have a bunch of gnarly personal concert stories. There was a concert I played that was at a skatepark near my hometown where a fight broke out and amid the chaos a dude started firing an automatic airsoft rifle into the air and crowd. We had to play after that lmao. One time one of my old bands we showed up to play a “fest” that was just a show in some teenagers driveway in a New Jersey suburb. I can’t even remember if we got paid. That sucked. Another time, we played a basement show where people were ripping the ceiling apart and setting off fireworks in the basement as bands played. There’s a video on youtube from that exact show where you can see me getting punched in the face by the closer of the night, a “Juggalo Power-electronics” set. Dude was nuts. WCPC Whoop whoop. But yeah I could go on.

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Chris: I moved here in late 2015 from Erie and definitely felt welcome here. Notably, I’ve been very happy with how much the local music scene has welcomed Flower Crown into it. When I joined the band and we started playing shows in 2018, a lot of people, especially those that have been playing in the local scene for years, were super fast to accept us talk to us and generally be cool. I think in Erie, or at least the hardcore scene I came up in ten or so years ago, there was a definite in-group/out-group dynamic, and I don’t see that anywhere near as much here.
Richie: Pittsburgh has been great. Coming a small town in northern PA, Pittsburgh was one of my favorite places to come as a kid. It seemed like the biggest place in the world. Now that I’m here I realize how small it is and I think it makes it more comfortable for me. Especially in the music scene, you’ve rubbed elbows with just about everyone, it’s tight knit but inclusive, and people are very friendly. You get the best of both small town and big city, and it really is the perfect for me.

Thanks, guys. I think those concert horror stories are funny as hell, Richie. I would love to compile a as many as I can from as many musicians and put it out somehow. Out of all the questions I ask, this is easily my favorite.

“Uniting and Celebrating Life and Love through Music”

Private I is a reggae/punk band from Somerset who just released their debut full length Better Late Than Never, which seems to be an apt title as their first self-titled EP arrived seven years ago. Catch their next show tomorrow (Sat. 5/18) at 1pm at the Johnstown Flood City Fest. I want to thank Nicholas Hoffman (Guitar/Vocals) for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.

First album you ever bought?
The first CD I ever bought was Nirvana’s Nevermind. The Sony Discman had recently come out and I begged my mom to buy me one for Christmas. And knowing that I was getting the Discman, I wanted to make sure that I had a CD to play as soon as i got it. There just so happened to be a way I could get 10 CDs for a penny, haha, but the only CD I was concerned with getting was that sweet, sweet Nirvana record. That album both changed my life and sent me on the path to becoming the person/musician I am today.

Last album you bought?
The last record I purchased was the Cobra Skulls’ American Rubicon. They were touring with Menzingers when they were still on Red Scare, and we went to see them at a basement show in Philly on what I believe was a Friday night and again two days later in Pittsburgh. It was at one of those two shows that I picked up the record from the merch table. Killer record, front to back! There is a lot of music out there that I would like to get my hands on, but we’ve been so busy working on our new record that I haven’t had the chance to get into much of anything else. Although, we are all super stoked to check out all the bands we will be playing with as we’re out supporting our latest release.

Favorite Album of all time?
There are so many amazing works out there… seriously difficult to narrow it down to one. But speaking in terms of influence, I would have to go with Sublime’s 40oz to Freedom. That record proved that what was going on in my head could be a reality. I love so many different types of music and hearing a record that not only mixed genres across tracks, but even within a single song? Genius! It truly blew me away and continues to even today.

Least favorite / most disappointing album?
The closest I have ever been to disappointment with any album would be the Bloodhound Gang’s Hefty Fine. I wasn’t necessarily disappointed; it just wasn’t what I was expecting. As I grew to appreciate it for all of it’s merit, I personally learned an important lesson about never judging anything based on expectation. I am quite fond of that record now, it seriously cracks me up as much as their other stuff, and i am honestly a bit ashamed of myself for not giving it the chance it deserved in the first place. Live and learn, yes?

First concert attended?
The first show i ever went to see was the Ramones at the I.C. Light Amphitheater in Pittsburgh back in April of ’96. I was fifteen, my girlfriend was eighteen and had a car, so we bought three tickets, grabbed my best friend (it was his first show, too) and headed to the ‘Burgh for a day I will never forget!

Last concert attended?
Punk In Drublic – Camp Anarchy 2018! Our bassist Jim and his awesome girl Val actually took me with them to the P.I.D. show in Pittsburgh two weeks prior to “Camp” and as if that incredible day couldn’t get any better, we scored cheaper tickets for the campout in Thornville, OH. while waiting in line for some grub! So, Jim and Val again scooped me up and we spent that weekend watching bands I believed that I would never get to see live! I will never be able to thank them enough for that once in a lifetime experience!

Favorite concert ever?
I’ve sincerely loved every show that I’ve had the privilege to attend, but one show means more to me than any of the others. In July, 1999, two of my best friends and I got to take my 5yr old little brother and my Mom (whom was sick with MS) to see the Steve Miller Band at the Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheater in Burgettstown, PA. Not to say that S.M.B. is at the top of my list of favorite bands, but they were a common interest between my Mother, little Bro, and myself. It was so special to share the experience with them both, especially considering we lost our Mom the following year. It’s an amazing memory we will cherish forever.

Least favorite concert?
I literally cannot say I have ever been to a show that I didn’t enjoy. Every single one has afforded me great fun and memories!

Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
When I think of Pittsburgh, only one word comes to mind… fun! Every time I go to the ‘Burgh it is to do something cool. Whether it’s been to go to the countless concerts I’ve attended, to take my daughter to the Carnegie Science Center and Museum, or to attend a sporting event, I know that if I’m heading to the city it’s going to be a blast! Pittsburgh is the place to be to have a great time and I get absolutely amped when I know that’s where we are heading!

Thanks, Nick. I happened to be at that Ramones show. The only time I got to see them. So fun!
