“Crushed Out is an explosive hit of surf-garage momentum and rock & roll from Brooklyn, NY consisting of Frank Hoier on guitar and vocals and Moselle Spiller on drums. After four national tours and a well-received EP, 2010’s Show Pony, the couple, formerly known as Boom Chick, are set to release their debut full-length, Want To Give, on Nov. 6, 2012 on their own Cool Clear Water imprint. Want to Give is a pure guitar/drum adrenalin rush – plenty of fuzz, tremolo, riffs, chunky chords, slide and Black Sabbath power chords. The songs are tight and lean; no fat, no studio fairy dust. Recorded both at Brooklyn’s Bunker Studio as well as at Crushed Out’s own analog studio in a rural New Hampshire barn, the tracks were all self-produced and mixed by John Davis.”
The duo returns to Pittsburgh at GarArt this upcoming Saturday on a bill with The Hounds Below, White Like Fire and New Vegas. My thanks to Frank Hoier (Vocals, Guitars) and Moselle Spillar (Drums) for participating in this edition of First/Last.
- The first album you ever bought?
- Frank: Probably Young MC or DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.
- Moselle: Rick Charette (little kid music). It was a live show and I got up on stage on danced with the other toddlers.
- Your last album bought?
- Frank: The Everly Brothers “Best Of” (dusty old vinyl in a thrift store).
- Moselle: Bruiser Queen (excellent rock duo from St. Louis).
- Favorite album of all time?
- Frank: TheBeatles, “Self Titled” (The White Album).
- Moselle: T. Rex, “Electric Warrior”.
- Least favorite/most disappointing album?
- Frank: Wow, least favorite? Nothing comes to mind. I don’t hate on music. Try to just listen to the good stuff. I’m usually the guy that digs the ‘disappointing’ 2nd album, like MGMT’s “Congratulations”. Love it.
- Moselle: I don’t have one.
- First concert attended?
- Frank: Bob Dylan & Joan Baez when I was 1 year old.
- Moselle: Probably Rick Charette again. My mom says I was four.
- Last concert?
- Frank: Last concert we paid to see was Foxy Shazam in Omaha, NE.
- Moselle: Before that one, we saw Dick Dale in Denver, CO in 2011. He ripped it up!
- Favorite concert ever?
- Frank: The White Stripes 2002 show in San Francisco to about 500 people, or The Weber Brothers in 2008.
- Moselle: Probably a local show of our friends’ bands in Brooklyn. A particular Soft Black/Shilpa Ray show at Death By Audio was pretty fun.
- Least favorite concert?
- Frank: Gosh, kinda mean! Um, probably some huge band at Coachella.
- Moselle: Lit and Creed at an arena in Portland, ME in the 90’s. I went with middle school friends because it was something to do and in rural NH and ME you just go to whatever is happening.
- Any thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
- Frank: The people are really cool and friendly, but a little wild! After our first show at the Thunderbird Café, we were loading out when a drunk driver two blocks up drove his Explorer into about five parked cars. The second time we played the Thunderbird, we came out to a woman lying on the ground in the street with a crowd of people shouting around her. The next morning we had some of the best vegan brunch we’ve ever had.
- Moselle: The first person to attempt recording our band we met in Brooklyn, but he was from Pittsburgh. The second show of the first tour we ever did was in Pittsburgh. Frank left the spare set of van keys in Pittsburgh…they are out there somewhere.
