On Saturday, April 30 from 6-9:30pm head on over to Wigle Whiskey Barrelhouse for a fundraiser hosted and MC-ed by yours truly featuring a sweet local music lineup to help offset the costs of putting on the Deutschtown Music Festival this year. Donations will be accepted on site and at this link. This is a 21+ event.
From the organizers:
Wigle Whiskey has offered us an opportunity to host a fundraiser at their awesome Barrelhouse on Spring Garden Ave. We
will have live performances from Chet Vincent & The Big Bend, Devin Moses & The Saved, and Wreck Loose. La Palapa, Mexican Gourmet Kitchen will be serving up some great food. Admission is free, but we are asking for donations. All proceeds go to help pay this year’s bands. Last year we were able to pay around $100 to each of our 130 bands, this year’s list is already up to 178, which means we are already about $5000 behind. Please come help us out and enjoy a very fun evening.
Please go out and help #SupportPGHMusic

The Deutschtown Music Festival Fundraiser with Working Breed, André Costello and the Cool Minors, Chet Vincent & The Big Bend and Big Gypsy at the Andy Warhol Museum on Saturday, April 11, 2015 in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Deutschown Music Festival returns this year to take over the North Side of Pittsburgh on Saturday, July 11, 2015. The organizers of the event are hoping to be able to pay the bands this third year and they have launched an ambitious Indiegogo campaign to do just that. Let’s SUPPORT PITTSBURGH MUSIC and help spread the word. They also put on shows leading up to the fest and this one featured some of my favorite local bands. The revelation this particular night was my first time seeing the powerhouse quartet Big Gypsy. They are a smoking soul stirring blues-rock band that is quickly and deservedly gaining popularity. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

“Casino Bulldogs is a fantastic rock band that explores many genres to produce catchy music with a wonderful flow. Since forming in 2008, the band has released nearly 40 original songs spread out across three full-length albums and two Eps. Their music has been featured at PNC Park during Pittsburgh Pirate games, as well as on radio stations including 105.9 WXDX, 102.5 WDVE, and 92.1 WPTS. Casino Bulldogs have even shared the stage with a handful of national acts including Everclear, Eve 6, and Jimmy’s Chicken Shack, and have been hailed by local media as being “highly melodic, bouncy and fun, while retaining grit, volume, and a smack of punk rock enthusiasm”. In August, the band will be releasing a new 9 song album entitled “Fashion in Various Evils”
Check out the band at their official Website, Facebook, BandCamp, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter. They are finalizing their latest album, “Fashion in Various Evils” for a late summer release and you can preview the music tomorrow at the Deutschtown Music Festival, where the band play around 11 p.m. at Peanutz. They have quickly become a local favorite of mine and I want to thank Jason Hahn (Bass/Vocals), Brad Pfueffer (Drums) and Greg Trimeloni (Guitar/Vocals) for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.
The first album you ever bought?
Jason Hahn: “The Stranger”, Billy Joel.
Brad Pfueffer: ‘I Guess That’s Why They Call it the Blues’, Elton John.
Greg Trimeloni: “Transmissions from the Satellite Heart”, The Flaming Lips (on cassette).
Your last album bought?
Jason & Brad: “…Like Clockwork”, Queens of the Stone Age.
Greg: “Wild Water Kingdom”, Heems.
Favorite album of all time?
Jason: Definitely the debut album by Frank Black and the Catholics.
Brad: “OK Computer”, Radiohead.
Greg: Tough one. In recent years, I’d have to say it’s a toss-up between “Suck it and See” by Arctic Monkeys and “Real Emotional Trash” by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.
Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Jason: Whatever the newest Green Day album is.
Brad: Kings of Leon’s last one, I don’t remember the name.
Greg: “Zeitgeist”, Smashing Pumpkins. The guitar work and drumming was excellent, but I could only really get into a few of the songs…it was a bit of a letdown after the excellent “Machina” and “Machina II” albums. But, I’m really enjoying their latest album, “Oceania”!
First concert attended?
Jason: Beck.
Brad: Tom Petty.
Greg: Aerosmith.
Last concert?
Jason: The Melvins.
Brad: Local Natives.
Greg: Silversun Pickups.
Favorite concert ever?
Jason: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds at Strathmore in Washington, DC.
Brad: Steely Dan at Post-Gazette Pavilion in 2006.
Greg: Hum, their 2nd reunion show, in Champaign, IL. It was awesome meeting so many people who traveled there from all over the country.
Least favorite concert?
Jason: Social Distortion at Stage AE last year. There were so many drunk chicks and meatheads screaming stupid nonsense that I couldn’t even hear the band, I was totally bummed by that.
Brad: Spoon at the American Eagle concert in the South Side.
Greg: Any “battle of the bands” show that I’ve ever played.
Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Jason: Watching Sonic Youth play at the Three Rivers Arts Festival a few years back. It was one of the nicest summer days I can remember, and the beautiful sounds of guitar feedback echoing off the PPG building was surreal.
Greg: My favorite Pittsburgh experiences would definitely include all of the shows we’ve been lucky enough to play here. Also, hearing two of our songs played at PNC Park during Pirate games was really cool too!
Brad: What Greg said! Playing shows and getting to meet a bunch of awesome musicians has been a blast.
Thanks, fellas. I am really loving the new album! I also love how it sounds live!
“This duo features Frankenbass guitarist Adam Fagelson and drummer Stephen Dusenberry. Though Motometer is an entirely new project, Fagelson and Dusenberry are veterans of the music industry. Motometer results in a creative and dynamic sound that is completely their own.”
Check out the Pittsburgh band on Facebook and also check them out this Saturday at the inaugural Deutschtown Music Festival around Midnight-ish at Peanutz. I want to thank Adam Fagelson (Bass/Vocals) and Stephen Dusenberry (Drums/Synths) for taking a few minutes to participate in this edition of First/Last.
The first album you ever bought?
Adam Fagelson: This is tough…I am pretty certain is was either The Ramones, Subterranean Jungle or an old SST compilation with Worm, Husker Du, Black Flag and a few others punk rock bands from the time.
Stephen Dusenberry: First album I bought was “Zebop” by Santana at Heads Together in Squirrel Hill in 1981. I was a year old and remember the song ‘Winning’ was my favorite song at the time. Years later, I met Carlos Santana and had him sign the exact record.
Your last album bought?
Adam: The last album I bought was King Orchid, “In Battle”. We played a show with them a bit ago and they were the balls!
Stephen: “State”, the newest album by Todd Rundgren.
Favorite album of all time?
Adam: So hard…there are many. I’d have to go with Cream, “Disraeli Gears” since it was what I cut my teeth on musically at an early age.
Stephen: Wow…I usually hate these types of questions since the answer changes rather frequently. However, at the top of my favorite albums list is usually “Trick Of The Tail” by Genesis. Without question, Phil Collins has long been one of my biggest influences as a drummer/songwriter. In my opinion, Phil’s playing really shines on this album. I’ve always loved the way he makes odd-time signatures ‘groove’ and I feel he does it on this album better than any other Genesis album.
Least favorite/most disappointing album?
Adam: Ok…now bear with me. I am going to say ZZ Top, “Eliminator”. I know, I know that was ages ago BUT…ZZ Top (until that album – and arguably the album prior, “El Loco”) was a kick-ass power-trio. If you are unfamiliar with their early albums I highly recommend a listen. Most notably, “First Album” and “Tejas”.
Stephen: The latest N.E.R.D. album. I’ve always liked the production style of The Neptunes, however for some reason their latest album lacks a dynamic element in my opinion.
First concert attended?
Adam: The Moody Blues with my folks…I was 8.
Stephen: The Monkees, Civic Arena in 1986.
Last concert?
Adam: Yes with Procol Harum here in the ‘Burgh.
Stephen: Dave Matthews Band, First Niagara Pavilion in 2013. I’ve been a fan of theirs since 1994 and have probably seen them over 50 times since then.
Favorite concert ever?
Adam: Another tough one…I am going with The Ramones in 1983.
Stephen: Hands down, Michael Jackson during the ‘BAD’ tour at the Civic Arena in 1987 when I was in the second grade. It was the opening night of a 3 night run there and I sat in the 10th row directly in front of former Steelers quarterback Bubby Brister.
Least favorite concert?
Adam: I saw the lead singer from Candlebox spit on my friend who at the time was running the stage monitors. Apparently he wasn’t pleased with his mix…DICK!
Stephen: Probably going to get heckled for this but Van Halen at the Consol Center during their most recent tour. The sound was so terrible that I left, halfway through the show. It was physically painful how ‘high’ the ‘highs’ were going through the PA. I noticed other people leaving early as well.
Favorite thoughts, experiences about Pittsburgh?
Stephen: Probably the abundance of history still visible throughout the city. Many of the older houses around the North Side and East End are like living breathing time capsules.
Thanks, fellas. Closing out the fest at Peanutz, eh? Should be a great time.
“Deutschtown Music Festival is a free show, on July 6, 2013, in Pittsburgh’s Deutschtown neighborhood
in the Northside, featuring more than 40 bands/performances at an
outdoor stage and multiple indoor venues. An opportunity to experience
Deutschtown’s burgeoning music scene!”
For the next several days leading up to the inaugural Deutschtown fest, I will be featuring a local band playing. Check out the complete line-up here. Today’s band is Locks and Dams, who will be performing the on the main outdoor stage on Foreland Street at 5 p.m. My thanks to Bill Schill (Guitar/Harmonica/Vocals), Nate Campisi (Bass), Zachary Smith (Banjo/Guitar/Vocals) and Chris McCune (Drums/Vocals) for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.
First album you ever bought? Bill Schill: First album I ever bought was “Punk-O Rama 3” although my parent’s
passion for the oldies definitely left a mark. Story has it I danced a lot to
the ‘Axel Foley’ theme from “Beverly Hills Cop” when I was real small as well. Nate Campisi: “Led Zeppelin II” and Neil Young’s “Rust Never Sleeps”. Zak Smith: First album I ever had was the ‘Wayne’s World’ soundtrack. First
album I bought was Nirvana’s “Nevermind”. Chris McCune: I grew up listening to a steady stream of Beatles and Hendrix. The
first stuff I was buying with “my own money”, like around 5th grade was stuff
like The Cranberries, Primus, Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Mighty Mighty
Bosstones, and a variety of mid/late nineties alt,ska/punk. I feel the physical
format is still king here in Pittsburgh. This town is such a record collectors
treat, we have so many great independent record shops.
Last album bought? Bill: I think it was Hot Water Music’s “Exister”. Zak: Jeru the Damaja, “Wrath of the Math”. I just updated it from having the
tape. Chris: Recently, live Joanna Newsome, live Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s “Year
of the Horse”, Sun Ra’s “Bad & Beautiful”, Freddie Hubbard (a lot of the
CTI releases), Lee Perry’s “Roast Fish, Collie Weed, and Cornbread”.
Favorite album of all time? Bill: I don’t really have one of those because I like a wide variety of music.
But the ones I can’t put down right now are: Red City Radio’s “The Dangers of
Standing Still”, Neko Case’s “Blacklisted”, and any of the ‘Revival Tour
Compilations’. Zak: A few that come to mind are Townes Van Zandt’s “Self Titled”, Bobby’s “Self
Titled”, The Rolling Stones’ “Let it Bleed”, Percy Sledge’s “Greatest Hits” and
Tom Waits’ “Bone Machine”. Nate: The Rolling Stones’ “Let it Bleed”, “Sticky Fingers”, and “Exile on
Main St.”, Paul Butterfield’s “East-West”, Tapes n’ Tapes’ “The Loon”, Black
Angels’ “Passover”, Lonnie Mack’s “The Wham of That Memphis Man”, Fleetwood Mac’s
“Kiln House”, Misfits’ “Static Age”, Bobby’s “Bobby”, Beach House’s “Teen Dream”,
Spooky Tooth’s “Spooky Two”, Calexico’s “Feast of Wire” and Sleep’s “Jerusalem”.
Current favorite album is Pretty Things’ “Parachute”.
Least favorite/most disappointing album? Bill: I don’t know if I have anything like that. Nothing comes to mind,
although I was disappointed with Iron and Wine’s latest album when it came out.
It wasn’t bad, it was just and different and wasn’t what I wanted to hear. Zak: There was a Ja Rule album that ended up in my car somehow….probably that.
First concert attended? Bill: I don’t remember. Factually, probably some terrible kids show. But to be
hip let’s say it was some awesome punk band in a basement somewhere. “I’m
pretty sure I was the only one there.” Chris: 1998 ‘Sno-core Tour’ with Primus, Blink-182, The Alcoholics, and The
Aquabats.
Last concert attended? Bill: Saw Gaslight Anthem in Atlanta and they pulled my heart strings and
rocked me into ecstasy. Zak: Cold War Kids. Chris: Come Holy Spirit (an awesome Pittsburgh band with one of the city’s best
drummers).
Favorite concert ever? Bill: Very possibly the one listed above, as I am still feeling the nostalgic
after effects. Zak: Raconteurs at Stubbs, Old Crow Medicine Show at Mr. Smalls, Dan Auerbach
at Mean Eyed Cat, every Deer Tick show I’ve seen. Nate: Sleep, 2010 in NYC. Beach House, 2012 in D.C. Mogwai,10+ years ago at
Rosebud in Pgh.
Least favorite concert ever? Bill: I think my last Warped Tour I went to was garbage. Zak: I got free Carrot Top tickets once. I already assumed it would be bad so I
gave them to my sister. I think she had fun though…I forget. Nate: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
Favorite thoughts/experiences
about Pittsburgh?
Bill: Predispositions aside, there are so many awesome things about Pittsburgh.
When it comes to music, the “scene” here is incredible because of the variety
of musical artists that are here and on top of that, many, many, many of them
are extremely talented. It’s sad in a way because the ‘Burgh doesn’t get enough
recognition for the music it puts out and it is usually at the front of the
next big style. One of my favorite personal stories involves copious amounts of
alcohol at Dee’s in the Southside and then waking up on a side walk in Mt.
Washington outside of some house party. Three years later, my best friend ends
up renting the same house…weird.
Zak: Too Many. I love this city.
Chris: Pittsburgh is the greatest city in America.
Thanks, guys. Man, is this fest going to be awesome!
