First/Last-Florentijn Hofman

October 18, 2013

“The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn’t discriminate people and doesn’t have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!”

Florentijn Hofman brought his duck to Pittsburgh a few weeks ago and I for one loved it. Such a seemingly simple concept attracted plenty of joy, commerce and literally thousands of people to ‘experience ‘ it and ultimately proved what public art can accomplish. That opening night arrival seemed like one damn fun party. Despite some pre-arrival controversy and some people who didn’t ‘get it’, the overall consensus was that our big yellow visitor was a hit. The Rubber Duck will be leaving us this Sunday (even though many want it to stay) so if you want to go say farewell, do so soon. I want to thank Florentijn for bringing his wonderful art to our city and for taking the time to participate in this edition of First/Last.
