On ‘assignment’ for the good folks at WYEP, I really wasn’t familiar with his work at all. I kind of wish I was, in that I would have definitely appreciated it more. The show was broken up into two parts, the first consisting of his devastatingly personal new album, Songs For Lulu, in it’s entirety. The second was more of a regular set. The whole show was sans band with just Rufus and a grand piano. He sounded great and I can’t help to think the ornate surroundings added to the show. His sister Martha opened the night with a just as spare performance. A more detailed review here. More photos here.
